Departmental Web Resources

The Main Department Web Site

The main department web site at http://www.math.mcmaster.ca is maintained by the departmental office.  Contact Julie Fogarty if you'd like anything changed or added to these pages.

Secondary and Personal Sites

A number of other sites are maintained on the departmenta server ms.mcmaster.ca; these are pages that needn't conform to the standard McMaster templates and are maintained by individual faculty, staff or graduate students. Some examples are:

Advertising Your Site

You can advertise your site as http://ms.mcmaster.ca/sitename or  http://mathandstats.mcmaster.ca/sitename.  Sites created before the main site was moved to the Faculty of Science server (in June of 2013) can also use http://www.math.mcmaster.ca/sitename.

Posting to Personal Pages

Your ms.mcmaster.ca home directory has a folder called public_html to which you can post pages.

Access from Servers and Workstations

public_html should appear in your home directory on the server or any of the departmental workstations. If you don't see the folder, create it it like so:

cd
mkdir public_html
chmod o+x . public_html


Access via sftp From any computer, on campus or off, you can sftp to ms.mcmaster.ca and browse to the folder public_html in your home directory.
Access from Mac OS X In the Finder, click Go -> Connect to Server... and enter smb://ms.mcmaster.ca/username and then browse to public_html .
Access from Windows Click Start -> Run and enter \\ms.mcmaster.ca\/username and then browse to public_html.

Personal Pages - "Forbidden" Error

If you get the message "Forbidden: You don't have permission to access /~monger on this server." then you most likely need to adjust the permissions of you home and public_html folders:

cd ~
chmod o+x . public_html

Posting to Other Sites

There are some sites - e.g. older personal sites; research-group sites - which are located not in public_html folders but at the document root of the web server.

Access from Servers and Workstations

You can access the document root shown above on www.math as well as on most linux/unix workstations maintained by RHPCS.

From unix and OSX computers on the Math & Stats network you can access the document root show above with the prefix /net/ms/share/www. For example:

cd /net/ms/www/sites/ms.mcmaster.ca/html/mysitename


Access via sftp From any computer, on campus or off, you can sftp to ms.mcmaster.ca and go to the directory /www/sites/ms.mcmaster.ca/html/mysitename
Access from Mac OS X In the Finder, click Go -> Connect to Server... and enter smb://ms.mcmaster.ca/www and then browse to ms.mcmaster.ca/html/mysitename.
Access from Windows Click Start -> Run and enter \\ms.mcmaster.ca\/www and then browse to ms.mcmaster.ca/html/mysitename.
