Math 3Z03 Instructions

Assignments (30%)

there will be five assignments (consisting of historical and challenging problems)
assignments will be posted on the course home page at least one week before the due date. Due dates can be found on the course home page.
assignments will be collected in class by the instructor. No late assignments will be accepted

Presentations and Reports (40%)

there will be two presentations for each student
group work is allowed, but not more than two people in a group - each group selects a topic approved by the instructor and signs up for an oral presentation.
a week after the oral presentation, each presenter must submit a written report to the instructor in class
each oral presentation is worth 10% and each report 10% of the final grade

presentations should be 15 to 20 minutes in length for each presenter; the remaining time is devoted to discussion
use blackboard for formulas and mathematical explanations and the computer for pictures and graphics.
presenters are evaluated for their presentation by other students but mainly by the instructor
attendance is compulsory: you are required to attend all presentations and participate in the discussion
keep your own notes about other students' presentations; there will be quizzes and you will be asked to evaluate the presentations..

maximum number of pages is 10 (that includes all pages and all pictures); double-space the text
reports are individual, i.e. each group member writes her/his report; reports belonging to the members of the same group must be different (of course, some material (text, formulas, etc.) will appear in both papers, but this should be kept to a minimum)
reports should contain more details than the oral presentation, and should include a bibliography (you are allowed to use internet sources, but at least three of the references must be 'non-electronic literature' (books etc.)

There will be two 30-minute quizzes to be written in class. The short questions (mostly true/false and multiple choice will be based on both the material from the presentations and the assignments.
