Statistics 2MA3 - Assignment 1

Due: 1998-01-23 17:00

Please place your completed assignment in the box marked for your tutorial group in the basement of BSB.

Q1

Program a spreadsheet to plot the Bin(n, p) p.d.f for any given n and p.

Q2

Prove that

[P(R|D)/P(Rc|D)]/[P(R|Dc)/P(Rc|Dc)] = [P(D|R)/P(D|Rc)]/[P(Dc|R)/P(Dc|Rc)]

where Rc denotes the complement of the event R, and explain why this result is important in the interpretation of medical studies.

Q3

In a retrospective study, 35 men who had died from cardiovascular disease were matched with 25 men who had died from other causes. Of the 35 cases, 5 had been on a high-salt diet before they died, compared to just 2 of the control subjects. Interpret these results in terms of odds ratios and risk ratios.

Q4

If 7 balls are drawn at random from an urn containing 35 red balls and 25 white balls, what is the probability of getting 5 or more red balls? Can you apply this calculation to the cardiovascular study in Question 3?

Q5

Do 3.79 to 3.82 on page 67. You will have to get the data organized, then use MINITAB to make tables so that you can compute relative risks.

Q6

Do 3.85 to 3.88 on page 68.

Q7

Do 4.23 and 4.24 on page 98.

Q8

Do 4.36 to 4.38 on page 99.
