16 December 2013 Many people noticed during today's final exam that the formula sheet was not exactly the same as the one posted. My apologies for this oversight. In fact, thre was only  one question which used a missing formula, and the absence of the formula will be taken into account in the grading process.

9 December 2013
For those people who seem to have missed the information in class: the final exam is on Monday Dec 16, 9:00-12:00. You will have to check the registrar's website to find where you are supposed to be writing. The exam covers all of the semester. There will be approximately 10 questions worth one point each and approximately 20 questions worth two points each. All questions are multiple choice; there will be no partial credit.

Math Help Centre is open next week every afternoon 2:30--6:30. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday it will have twice as much space as usual, and lots ot TAs on duty. So come out and get answers to all of your questions!

Decision made about final mark in the course!!!! You will receive the BETTER of the following two ways of calculating your mark.
1) 20% assignments, 20% each midterm, 40% final
2) 100% final
So do your utmost to prepare for the final exam -- it might make a big difference.
You do NOT need to do anything --- the marks will be calculated both ways and you will AUTOMATICALLY receive the better mark.

27 November 2013 The due date for Assignment 5 is postponed by 24 hours due to the state of isolation of McMaster from the world yesterday. Assignment 4 is now due on Friday, 29 November at midnight.

Grades are up again! The glitch turned out to have affected very few people. Come to Dr Haskell's office (preferably during office hours) if you want to see your exam or scantron (note that you will have to find it yourself), or to ask questions about the exam.

On the midterm, you will be given the summation formulae which appear on p. A37 of Stewart (Theorem 3). You should plan to memorise the Table of Indefinite Integrals which appears on p.398 of Stewart.

Question 14 of the set of practice problems: the derivative of the function given is positive wherever it is defined. So a more precise answer to the question is that the function is increasing on its entire domain, which is the union of the two intervals (-infinity, 0) and (0, infinity).

A collection of practice problems for the second midterm.

1 November 2013 Second midterm coming up in two weeks! It will cover everything since the last midterm. That is: 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 4.7, 4.9, App E, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 6.1. The earlier material will not be tested explicitly, but will be tested in the sense that it is needed for later material. For example, you will not be asked to find a derivative, but you will be asked to find some antiderivatives, for which, of course, you need to know your derivatives. The format will be the same as the first midterm: 90 minute test, in the evening, on Thursday November 14. Room assignments are posted here; the alphabetical order is switched from the first midterm. That is, if you wrote at 6:30 last time, you will write at 8:30 this time, and vice versa. (The last will be first, and the first will be last, as it were.) The early seating, for those with a scheduled conflict, will be 4:30--6:00 of the same day. Submit your request for the early seating on the homework website. A collection of practice problems and a practice test will be posted shortly.

Please notice that the Maple Lab assignment for this week is due on Wednesday at midnight, rather than Thursday. This is so that you can enjoy your midterm break with a clear conscience. TAs are available in the computer labs on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons (see the lab schedule at the end of the page).

There were two mistakes on the answer key for the midterm; they have now been corrected and the marks re-run. For an unfortunate few people, this resulted in a decrease in their mark. I apologise for this. The correct answers are:
#6 version 4 A
#16 E, D, B, E, C on versions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 respectively. Here is Version 1 of the test; the other versions are very similar.

17 October 2013 The midterm marks are now posted. Look at Math 1A03/1ZA3 Marks on the homework website. Notice that your score, the version number of your test and the answers that you gave are all recorded there. The answer key for all versions is here. If you have any questions about the marking of the test (for example, if you want to see your scantron card) then vist Dr Haskell in HH316 during office hours.

5 October 2013 There has been much confusion about calculators, not helped by the fact that the version code of the "official McMaster calculator" is very hard to discover. Here is the word from the Registrar: the official McMaster calculator is the Casio fx-991-MS. This is the only calculator allowed in the final exam, and hence it is the only calculator allowed in the upcoming midterm. Please ensure that you have the correct calculator by Thursday.
5 October 2013 Q64 on the practice problems has the wrong answer given: the correct answer is (c), not (d). Thanks to Michelle for pointing this out.

3 October 2013 Midterm 1 coming up in one week. It will cover: 1.6, 2.5, 2.7, 2.8, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, 3.11, 4.1 and 4.8. Note that Chapter 1, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 (except Squeeze Theorem) are assumed background knowledge. A practice test (with answers) is posted here, to give you an idea of the length and approximate difficulty of the upcoming test. (It does include one problem from 4.2; this material will not be on the test next week.) Tutorials next week will be review for the midterm. Additionally, there are four review sessions scheduled through the Math Help Centre. These are all in ITB 137: Monday Oct 7 20:00-22:00, Tuesday Oct 8 16:30-18:30, 19:00-21:00, 21:00-23:00. These sessions are for your benefit -- come prepared with questions to ask the TAs.

1 October 2013 Room assignments are now posted for the first midterm on 10 October; check this website for the information. If you have a scheduled conflict with the midterm time, you will also find there a link from which you can request to take the midterm at the alternate time, which is Wednesday Oct 9 2:30-4:00.

29 September 2013 Here is a big collection of practice questions for you to work on in preparation for the upcoming midterm. The answers are in a separate file. Consult your TA, the Math Help Centre or your instructor if you have specific questions about any of the problems. Later this week, a practice midterm will be posted, as well as the sections of the book that will be tested on the midterm.

26 September 2013 Dr Bays has not yet covered Newton's method in class, so the deadline for Maple Lab 1 is extended until Saturday at midnight to give his students a chance to understand what they are supposed to be doing. He will cover the material in class on Friday -- don't miss it!

24 September 2013 A lost phone and and lost black, long-sleeved shirt were found in the lecture room after Irena's 1ZA tutorial this afternoon. Contact Irena if you think they are yours.

23 September 2013 Question 11 part (a) on Assignment 2 was being marked incorrectly. The problem has now been fixed. If you have already done that question, go back and see if it was re-graded

20 September 2013 As many of you noticed, the homework website crashed last night. The server was down from about 10pm until about 5am this morning. Because we really want you to do that assignment, the deadline is extended until midnight tonight (Friday night). Hopefully it will not crash again this evening.

26 August 2013 Welcome to  Math 1A03 and Math 1ZA3. The instructors are looking forward to teaching you, and we hope that you are looking forward to starting university. Classes begin on Thursday September 5 (for those whose class meets on Thursdays) or Friday September 6. Tutorials will start in the week of September 9. During the last week of summer, you can prepare for university life by reviewing your grade 12 calculus course material. Don't just read the notes -- do some problems! You will find the first few weeks of the course much easier if you are prepared. Another good source of review material is the Math Review Manual (also available as a book: Calculus: Fear no more). See Dr Lovric's website http://ms.mcmaster.ca/lovric/rm.html for more information.

Help available

Math Help Centre in HH104 M-R 14:30-20:30, F 14:30-18:30. Drop-in for help from TAs, or work on problems with other students. The Math Help Centre opens in the week of September 16.

Help with lab assignments: Before each lab assignment deadline, TAs are available in a computer lab on campus to help with any difficulties with the lab assignments. Here is the schedule. For help at other times, consult the TAs or your instructor. Please note that you do not have to go to a computer lab at the scheduled times to do the lab assignments: these are designed to be self-contained. All the information that you need to do the labs is in the lab tutorials (on the website) and in the CalcLab manuals.

Teaching Assistants: The TA who run the tutorials are available in the math help centre at the hours posted below. You can also send an email, but remember that it is hard to explain math by email, so plan to come in and talk with them.

Required and recommended problems

The minimum amount of work you should do in order to keep up with the course is all of the homeworks (assignments and labs), as well as all of the recommended problems. Probably you will need to do more than this. All odd-numbered problems from the text have worked solutions in the solutions manual, as well as brief solutions at the back of the book. The challenge problems are to encourage you to realise that there is more to the ideas we are working with than the calculations sometimes indicate. You are encouraged to discuss all these problems with your colleagues, your TAs and your instructors.

Course objective

The study of differential and integral calculus for  functions of one variable. Topics include:

1) continuity and differentiability, with emphasis on theory (intermediate value theorem, mean value theorem), practice (how to differentiate) and applications (curve sketching, optimization)

2) theory and techniques of integration, with emphasis on practice (how to integrate) and applications.

There will be homework or a midterm every week. The times and location for the midterms will be posted during the semester (see the calendar below for the dates). The assignments and Maple labs can be found at this website. You will need your mac id and the 14-digit code on your student id card in order to log in. You can work on these at any time up until the due date. No late homework will be accepted for any reason. At this website, you can also see our records of your marks so far.
