ANNOUNCEMENTS
4 December 2008 All
review sessions will be in CHN B107 (see below for times).
2 December 2008 All
marks are now posted on WebAssign. From the Math 1A homepage, go to
Grades/My Scores Summary. Click on Exams(2) and Projects(4) to check
that the correct marks are recorded. Ignore the Max Possible column.
Let your instructor know by Friday, Dec 5 at the latest if there are
any mistakes.
2 December 2008 Final Exam
Information The final exam is on Wednesday, December 17,
12:303:30. Information about rooms can be found on the registrar's
website: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca/scheduling/examfinalb.php# .
The final exam will have 610 problems; you must do all of them. There
will be a formula sheet; a copy is posted here
so that you know what to expect. DO NOT BRING THIS FORMULA SHEET INTO
THE EXAM ROOM.
A practice final is posted here.
The practice final is given only as something for you to work on; you
should not expect the real final to be identical in terms of number of
problems or ordering of topics.
The final exam will cover all of the material of the course. The lists
of topics for each midterm is a good guide for what to study for the
final exam (as well as chapter 7, of course). Here is a partial
list of topics that you do not need to know:
the definition of e; the change of base theorem for logs
the squeeze theorem for limits
arccosec, arcsec, arccot as functions; derivatives of inverse trig
functions (the most important ones are in the antiderivatives tables)
logarithmic differentiation
hyperbolic functions
the mean value theorem
partial fractions with repeated irreducible quadratic factors
2 December 2008 Help during
the exam period. The Math Help Centre will be running; check
its website for hours.

8 November 2008
ALERT Section 4.7 was
inadvertently left off the list of topics below for the midterm.
Optimisation is a topic for the midterm; here are some problems
14, 29, 36 on p. 329.
6 November 2008 Arrangements for Midterm 2 are the same as for Midterm 1. Review sessions will be run by Colin and Carolyn in ABB102 and TSH B105 6:308:30 on the evening of Monday, Nov 10. The exam is 6:457:45 on the evening of Tuesday, Nov 11. Room assignments are alphabetically by family name:
Name begins with: A E : MDCL 1102
Name begins with: F K: MDCL 1105
Name begins with: L O: MDCL 1309
Name begins with: P T: ABB102
Name begins with: U Z: MDCL 1110
Anyone with a scheduled conflict must contact Dr Haskell
haskell@math.mcmaster.ca by Monday, Nov 10 with your name, student
number, and reason for the conflict. The makeup time is 4:305:30 on
Tuesday, Nov 11.
4 November 2008
Revision to list of topics for midterm 2: section 6.4 and 6.5 WILL NOT
be on the midterm.

4.8: 15, 33
5.1: 3, 19
5.2: 3, 33
5.3: 5, 13, 31

6.5: 5, 15
And here is a practice
midterm, so that you can see what the real one might be like.
Solutions WILL NOT be posted. The TAs will go through the practice
midterms during the review sessions on Monday evening before the exam.
You can also ask
any of the instructors, or any TA in the Math Help Centre to look over
your work.
23 October 2008
Anyone affected by the Brandon fire will be excused from Quiz 5. Please
let your instructor know your name and ID number (if you have not
already gone through the associate dean's office). We will make further
adjustments to the course requirements as necessary.
