Math 1281 - Discrete Mathematics

(Adapted from the Course Calendar) Some of the topics covered
in this course are: basic set theory, graphs and algebras, introduction
to logic and proofs, number structures, basic combinatorics,
and algorithms. This is a two semester course that also includes
one lab a week.

Second Semester
- March 28, 2002 On Wednesday, we did section 9.1.
Because of Easter, there will be no class on both Friday and Monday.
On Wednesday, I will hand out a sheet describing the final exam.
You can also download it from the web. It is now available
as a .pdf document at the bottom
of this web page.
- March 26, 2002 We have finished chapter 8, and on Wednesday,
we will start chapter 9. The new homework assignment has been posted
to the web. Please note: this week's assignment is due on Thursday,
because class is cancelled on Friday.
- March 21, 2002 On Monday and Wednesday, we looked at
sections 8.1 and 8.2. For Friday, we will skip to section 8.5.
The new homework assignment has been posted to the web.
- March 15, 2002 During the last couple lectures,
we have covered sections 7.5-7.7. On Friday, we will finish the
last section of Chapter 7. The new homework assignment has
also been posted to the web.
- March 7, 2002 In yesterday's class, I handed back the midterms.
If you haven't recieved your midterm, you can come to my office and I will
give it to you. I have also posted the new homework assignment to
the web.
- March 5, 2002 In Monday's class, we started looking
at Section 7.4. We will finish this section and move onto Section 7.5
on Wednesday's class. I will also hand back the midterms on Wednesday.
- Feb 25, 2002 Welcome back from the break. In today's class
we finished Section 7.3. In Wednesday's class we will review for the exam.
- Feb 11, 2002 We finished Section 7.2 today. The exam
will cover every thing up to and including today. I will hand
out some information about the midterm on Friday.
- Feb 9, 2002 On Friday we finished looking at Chapter 6,
and on Monday we will start looking at Chapter 7. If you

The midterm is coming!!! I have posted a copy of the handout
describing the midterm to the web page. See the bottom
of the page. This handout will be handed out in class
this week.
- Feb 6, 2002 On Monday, we finished Section 6.5, and
today we looked at Section 6.6. The new homework can be found below.
- Jan 31, 2002 In Wednesday's class, we finished
our discussion on Section 6.1, and we also quickly covered the main
definitions of Section 6.2. The new homework assignment is below.
I also handed back the last homework assignment. Please come
and see me if you wish to have your assignment.
- Jan 25, 2002 We started Section 6.1, and we will finish
this section on Wednesday. I will also hand back the assignments on
Wednesday.
- Jan 23, 2002 In today's class, we finished up
Section 5.1 and started on Section 5.2. I have posted the new homework
assignment to the web site (see below).
- Jan 16, 2002 We finished section 4.6 today. On Friday
we will start Chapter 5. Homework assignment 1 will also be due on Friday.

- Jan 12, 2002 I have set my new office hours for the semester.
They will be on Tuesdays, 2:30-3:30, and Wednesdays, 3:30-4:30.
- Jan 11, 2002 Today we had the first class of the semester.
I handed back the exams, so if you didn't get your exam, please come
to my office to pick it up.
I also gave out a new homework assignment (see
below
for the assignmet). On Monday, we will start our investigation of
Section 4.6.
First Semester
- Dec 8, 2001 The exams have been graded, and the
results have been posted on my office door. Good luck with
the rest of your exams, and have a good holiday.
- Nov 30, 2001 I have posted a handout describing
the second semester to the web. You can find it below. I
will also make copies of this and pass it out in class.
- Nov 28, 2001 Please note that I will have office
hours on Tuesday, Dec 4, 2001, for the following
hours: 9:30-10:00, 10:30-12:30, and 1:30-5:30. This
is slightly different than the times I said on Monday.
In class today we finished our discussion of Section 2.6.
- Nov 24, 2001 I have added the exam review sheet to
the web page. See below under the handouts section.
- Nov 21, 2001 The new homework has been posted to
the web page (see below). In today's class we finished
Section 4.3. If you want some more information on Pascal's

- Nov 15, 2001 The new homework assignment has
been added to the web page (see below). In Friday's class
we will do Section 4.2 on the Pigeonhole Principle.
- Nov 12, 2001 Today we started to look at Section 4.1.
We will finish this section on Wednesday.
- Nov 10, 2001 On Monday, we will begin our examination
of Chapter 4 -- "Counting". If you want to check out the

- Nov 7, 2001 In today's class we finished Section 3.2
on Mathematical Induction. We started discussing recursion,
and we will wrap this topic up on Friday. The new homework
assignment has been possted below.
- Nov 6, 2001 During Wednesday's class we will
wrap up our discussion on induction and talk about
recursive functions.
- Nov 5, 2001 In today's class we will start
Section 3.2 on Mathematical Induction.
- Oct 31, 2001 I have finished grading the midterms.
They will be given out in class today. We will also
finish up Section 3.1 today in class. I have also
posted the new homework assignment on the web page (see below).
- Oct 17, 2001 I have added the handout describing
the midterm exam. See the handout section at the bottom
of this page. Today in class we covered some more of Section 2.3.
- Oct 13, 2001 In Monday's class (the 15th) we will
start section 2.3 on integers and division. For more on prime

- Oct 10, 2001 In today's class we started section 2.1. We will
finish this section and section 2.2 on Friday. You can find
the new homework assignment below.
- Oct 3, 2001 In Friday's class we will
finish our discussion on the growth of functions. We will
only cover the first part of section on 1.8. The new homework
assignment has been posted below.
- Oct 1, 2001 In today's class (the 1st) we started
looking at section 1.7 on sequences and series. In Wednesday's
class we will finish this section, as well as start

- Sept 26, 2001 In today's class we started looking at
section 1.5 on functions. In Friday's class (the 28th) we will
continue this discussion. The first homework assignment
was handed back in class. If you did not get your assignment,

- Sept 21, 2001 In Monday's class (the 24th) we will look at
section 1.5.
- Sept 19, 2001 In Friday's class (the 21st) we will start section
1.4 on
sets. The first homework assignment will also be due in class. Also,

- Sept 17, 2001 In Wednesday's class we continue section 1.3.
- Sept 15, 2001 In Monday's class (the 17th) we will start
section 1.3. The rest of this section will be finished on Wednesday.
