Math 1230 -- Calculus II

This course continues Math 1210 -- Calculus I. We will look at applications of integration, see an introduction of multiple integrals, sequences and series, and power series.

April 9, 2007 HWA 9 is now graded and you can see your preexam mark (use link above). HWA 9 can be picked up outside my office.
April 2, 2007 Today was a review class. It was also our last formal lecture. Remember that HWA 9 is due at my office at 5PM on April 3!
March 30, 2007 I discussed how to calculate area and arclength with polar coordinates. This was our last class of new material. On Monday I will be doing review. Please come with questions!
March 28, 2007 I introduced the notion of polar coordinates in today's class (Section 10.4). You should know how to translate from the regular cooridinate system to polar coordinates, and back, and how to draw simple graphs. As well, how to find the slope at a point.
March 26, 2007 Today we looked at Section 10.3, by discussing how to use calculus with parametric equations. In particular, we discussed how to compute the derivative; the arclength of a parametric curve, and the surface area of a solid of revolution.
March 23, 2007 Today we started Chapter 10. We skipped 10.1, but looked at 10.2 on parametric equations and curves. Be able to do problems like those discussed in class.
March 21, 2007 We finished Section 9.10 on Taylor and Maclaurin series. You should be able to do problems like we did in class.
March 19, 2007 We discussed Section 9.9 on geometric power series. The main idea is to write a function in terms of a power series that is similar to a geometric series.
March 16, 2007 We looked at Section 9.8 on power series. You should know how to find the radius of convergence and interval of convergence for a power series. Midterm II was handed back in the lab. Also, HWA 7 is due on Wednesday.
March 14, 2007 We had Midterm II today.
March 12, 2007 We discussed Section 9.7 on Taylor polynomials and how to approximate a function with a polynomial. I hope to have HWA 6 graded by this afternoon, so you will be able to pick up your assignments outside my office starting this afternoon.
March 9, 2007 Today we looked at Sections 9.5 and 9.6 by discussing four more test for determining convergence: alternating series test, absolute converegence test, ratio test, and root test.
March 7, 2007 Continuing from Monday's class, we discussed four tests (the integral test, p-series test, direct comparison test, and limit comparison test) to determine if an infinite series converges. See Sections 9.3 and 9.4. HWA 6 was due in class. (HWA for next week is to study for midterm).
March 5, 2007 We looked at Section 9.2 on infinite series. Know what it means for a infinite series to converge. Be able to do example like those we did in class.
March 2, 2007 We started looking at Chapter 9. We looked at section 9.1 on sequences. You should know what it means for a sequence to converge or diverge. In the lab I gave back the last HWA.
Feb. 28, 2007 We discussed Section 8.8 on improper integrals. HWA 5 was due in class, and HWA 6 was given out.
Feb. 26, 2007 I went over Section 8.6 on how to integrate with tables. I then discussed Section 8.7 on L'Hopital's Rule.
Feb. 16, 2007 We went over Section 8.5 on partial fraction decomposition.
Feb. 14, 2007 We finished Section 8.4 on trig substitution. HWA 4 was due in class, and I gave out HWA 6.
Feb. 12, 2007 I finished up Section 8.3 on intergration involving trig functions, and I started Section 8.4 on trig substitution.
Feb. 11, 2007 The midterm has been graded. Please pick up your midterm during the above times.
Feb. 9, 2007 We had midterm 1.
Feb. 7, 2007 I did some more examples of Integration by Parts. I also discussed some techniques for doing integration involving trig. functions. HWA 4 was officially assigned today.
Feb. 6, 2007 I added HWA 5 to the web. Also, the Final Exam will be on April 12, 2007.
Feb. 5, 2007 We went over Sectin 8.1 quickly and started our discussion of integration by parts (Section 8.2).
Feb. 2, 2007 We went over Section 7.6 on the center of mass. In the lab I handed back assignment 2.
Jan. 31, 2007 We studied Section 7.5 on the notion of work and its relation to integrals. Be able to do problems like those discussed in class. HWA 3 was due in class. I also handed out the exam review sheet.
Jan. 29, 2007 Today we looked at Section 7.4 on arclength and surface area. You need to know the two formulas discussed in class and how to use them.
Jan. 26, 2007 We covered section 7.3 on the shell method. You need to know the formulas for computing the volume of a solid obtained by a revolution using this alternative method. I handed back HWA 1 in the lab. If you need your assignment, please see me during my office hours.
Jan. 24, 2007 I covered the material of Section 7.2. You should know how to use the disk method to compute the volume of the solid obtained by revolving a function about a line. HWA 2 was due today, and HWA 3 was given out.
Jan. 22, 2007 We started our look at Chapter 7 by covering Section 7.1. You should know how to calculate the area between two curves or bounded by two curves by using the variation of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus discussed in class.
Jan. 19, 2007 We finished our brief look at differential equations; we saw how to use the separation of variables method, and we saw how to use differential equations to solve problems involving radioactive decay and Newton's Law of Cooling.
Jan. 17, 2007 We looked at Section 6.1 on differential equations. You should know what a differential equation is and how to check whether a given function is a solution. I also gave out HWA 2 (HWA 1 was due in class).
Jan, 15, 2007 We looked at Section 5.9 on hyperbolic functions. You should know the definition of sinh x and cosh x. As well, you should know how to deriviatives and integrals involving these functions.
Jan. 12, 2007 We covered Section 5.8 on Inverse Trig function. Know how to integrate functions involving the inverse trig. functions.
Jan. 10, 2007 We looked at section 5.7 on how to integrate log and trig functions. You should know the formulas for these functions. I also gave out the first HWA (see to the right).
Jan. 8, 2007 Today's class was on numerical integration (Section 5.6). You should know the formulas for the trapezoidal rule and Simpsons rule. As well, you need to know how to bound the error.
Jan. 5, 2007 In today's class I went over integration by substitution. You will expected to do problems that appear as examples in the text.
Jan. 3, 2007 Today was the first day of classes. I handed out the course outline (you can download it using the link to the right). I also quickly reviewed Section 5.4, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. This section was the last section that was covered in Math 1210.
