Sabbatical Activities (2008-09) |
I was on sabbatical from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009. You can see what I did below.
Commutative Algebra and Connections (Lincoln, NE)
- I attend a conference on Commutative Algebra: Connections with Algebraic Topology and Representation Theory. The conference was held from May 18 - 22, 2008 at the University of Nebraska.
Research in Teams (BIRS, Banff, AB)
- With
Chris Francisco and
Tai Ha, I spent May 25 - June 1, 2008 at the
Banff Research Station (BIRS) as part of their Research in Teams
program. We spent the week
Investigating graphs with odd cycles via commutative algebra.

Macaulay 2 Workshop (Snowbird, Utah)
- From June 28 - July 3, 2008, I attended the
Macaulay 2 Workshop
at Snowbird, Utah. As part of this workshop, I worked on
some documentation and code for computer algebra package Macaulay 2.
I am currently working with
Andrew Hoefel (Dalhousie) and
Chris Francisco (Oklahoma State) on an edge ideal package.
You can find more about this package on my Research
Page.
Where's Adam?
KUMUNU (Lincoln, NE)
- This year I was able to attend KUMUNU, which was held September 20-21. Before the conference, I visited Chris Francisco; after the conference, I stayed a couple of days to work with Brian Harbourne. Once I get a copy of the conference photo, I'll add it to this webpage.
AMS Special Session (Vancouver, BC)
- From Oct. 4 to 5, 2008, I attend the American Mathematical Society Special Session on Hilbert Functions and Free Resolutions. I gave a talk on the connections between graphs and monomial ideals.
Route 81 (Kingston, ON)
- This year's Route 81 Conference was
held at Queen's University in Kingston, ON. It was held on Oct. 18. I stayed after the conference to
give a seminar on my work
on fat points.

Clifford Lecture: Tropical Algebra (New Orleans, LA)
- From Nov. 4 through 16 I visited Tai Ha at Tulane University in New Orleans. As part of this visit, I gave a talk. Also, I attended this year's Clifford Lecture Series on Tropical Geometry.
Canadian Mathematical Society Winter Meeting (Ottawa, ON)
- I attended this year's CMS Winter Meeting (Dec. 5-9) in Ottawa;
I spoke in the
Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry Section. I talked about
nilpotent zero-nonzero patterns.

Hawaii
- Nothing math related -- just a vacation (Jan. 2009).
In the photo: Me and the sea turtle.
- I was invited by Monica Cojocaru to give a colloquium in the mathematics department at Guelph in February.
Tulane University (New Orleans, LA)
- Just in time for Mardi Gras, I visited Tai Ha at New Orleans. While I was there, I gave a colloquium in the department.
Universita di Catania (Catania, Sicily)
- I spent two weeks visiting the Universita di Catania to
work with Elena Guardo.
Besides starting a number of projects, I also gave a seminar
on my research (March 2009).
In the photo: Elena Guardo and me.
- I spent two weeks at the Universita di Genova, working
with Tony Geramita.
I also gave a talk on my work (March 2009).

- When I was visiting Genoa, I went to Turin for
two days to give a talk
and work with Enrico Carlini.

- I was invited by Kevin Vander Meulen to give a talk in his abstract algebra class (March 2009).
- Another trip to New Orleans to work with Tai Ha. I was in New Orleans during the first week of April.
- I attened the OCW conference in Waterloo, ON, to learn some more about combinatorics, and to meet some of the local people in the field (May 2009).
- I attended a conference on mathematics education at York University (June 2009).
