Announcements
- There has been a delay in receiving results of the scanning of the scantrons of the final exam. I will submit your grades to MOSAIC as soon as possible. Then the marks are "officially released" by the office of the registrar, but unfortunately, I
(and professors in general) don't know when that will occur. But it should normally occur until the end of August.
-
According to McMaster policy, professors are not permitted to give out any information about final marks or final exam marks before
the grades are released on MOSAIC. Please have a look at the Post exam FAQ (frequently asked questions). Make sure you read these before making any inquiries relating to your final mark.
- Exam results will not be posted on the web. The only way to view your exam is to follow the procedures given here. Also, I will be out of office from 18th of August until 1st of September. I will be able to process emails only until Monday (August
17th), but then I won't have access until the beginning of September. I wish you a nice end of the summer!

Exam Practical Information
- Time: Thursday August 6th during class time (7-10pm)
- Location: BSB 117 (Burke Science Building). It is located relatively close to the room where the tests took place, but please make sure you find the room on time.
- Duration: 3 hours
- Format: 30 multiple choice questions worth 1 mark each
- Coverage: All sections in all 3 sets of suggested problems. However, as announced in class, Section 10.4 (normal distribution) won't be part of the final exam, i.e. the material that is covered ends with section 10.3 (including expected value and variance).
- Only the McMaster standard calculator Casio fx-991 is allowed
- You MUST bring your student I.D. card to the exam
-
Just some personal words at the end of our time together: The final exam won't be as difficult as the sample exam - there will be
only 30 questions instead of 40, and also I did my best in selecting "doable" questions. So I am not sure in how far you students will think the final is easy or
difficult, that will probably vary among people. However, I think most if not all of you will be well prepared "content-wise".
-
Somebody even has pointed out to me that there is one mistake in the sample exam: In question 5, the answer should be "(i) only", which is not among the alternatives given. I am sorry about that - but I would
advise you to stop dealing with the mathematical content, and rather prepare a bit "mentally" for the exam.
-
That means I guess you have studied a lot during the last days - so now
clearly set a limit to that today, and try to be in a good shape for the
exam. Also, obviously this is a lot of stress for you, so try to treat
yourself well by sleeping/resting and eating well - and also I would
advise to give yourself some empathy in case you are very nervous or anxious. My personal strategy is always to "mentally
prepare" for the situation that I am anxious about (I understand it is
important for you passing the exam, but make sure you still "like
yourself" even if you fail) - because, at least in my case, only if I
somehow "accept" that I might also fail the exam (but that the world would
still continue to turn even in this case), then I think you can be ready
to try your best, mobilize all your energy for tonight and "rock the exam"
as good as you can.
And then let's see what the outcome will be, that is also partly dependent
on beeing a bit "lucky" if you can do/have practiced the questions I
selected. A last advice: Make sure you talk to your friends and/or family, at least for me that's always the best "treatment" for
anxiety, or at least afterwards, even if it didn't go the way you hoped,
they will be able to cheer you up I'm sure. I also need "someting to look
forward to/a reward" after such a stressful situation - so make sure you
also reward yourself even in case it didn't go perfectly, as the reward is
for you beeing able to cope with all the stress, which you did in any case
if you manage to write the exam, independent of the outcome.
-
But today, my advice would be to maybe go for a longer walk (e.g. in the
nature/wood near McMaster), try to relax and "mentally" prepare for this
"stressful exam situation" - then I am sure you will do well or at least
ok.
And on the weekend, don't forget to party/relax/enjoy your life - the
results of the exam won't be posted anyway until the end of next week.
I sincerely wish you all the best for tonight - and I hope at least some of you will still read this in time before the exam...
- Please have a look at the sample exam. The final exam will be based on the sections from the Suggested Problems (including the Suggested Problems #3, but excluding Section 10.4) plus proper computer card filling. It will take place on August 6th during class time (see above).
- The deadline of Assignment #9 has been moved to Wednesday (August 5th), 11:59pm. The reason is that it touches some material that we will cover only in the lecture tomorrow (due to the recent change in our the schedule), although in general you could/should have studied the material on your own using the textbook. In addition, Assignment #9 has been made optional. If you do/have done Assignment #9 then your lowest assignment mark will be dropped (even if that lowest mark is Assignment #9). If you don't do Assignment #9 then your assignment mark will be calculated based on the first 8 assignments.
- As announced in class, there is an update to the Course Calendar. As we are a bit behind schedule, we will have only limited time for a review during the lecture time (that's the only change to the course calender)
.
- IMPORTANT: The Course Evaluations are only possible until Friday July 31st 4pm. Please complete them online and find more information here. Your course evaluations are critical to future course
development and instructor assessment processes. Each evaluation will take approximately 5 to 15 minutes to
complete and your responses are completely anonymous. You would do me a huge favour if you evaluated the lecture. Thank you!
- Please have a look at the Sample Test #2 (with answers given on the last page). Also recommended is to read (again) instructions on how to fill out the computer card. Here is some Test #2 Practical Information:
- The test will take place in room BSB 106 in the "Burke Science Building" (the same room as last time) on July 23rd during from 7-8.15pm. Please make sure you arrive there on time.
- You MUST bring your student I.D. card to the test
- Only the McMaster standard calculator Casio fx-991 is allowed
- Your name and signature must be written in PEN on BOTH parts of the test paper and on the computer card.
- The rest of the computer card must be filled out in PENCIL
- If you cannot write the test due to medical or family reasons then fill out this form WITHIN ONE WEEK of the missed test. In this case the weight for the missed test will be added to your final exam.
- Test #2 will be based on the sections from the Suggested Problems #2 plus proper computer card filling. It will take place on July 23rd during class time (from 7-8.15pm), and we will then continue with the lecture from 8.30-9.45pm (or until 10pm, depending on how far we proceed) in our usual room HH109.
- During the time between Test #1 and Test #2, I would suggest you check out How should I study for this course?, if you have not yet done so - it contains some valuable information how to study most effectively.
- Please have a look at the Sample Test #1 (with answers given on the last page). Also recommended is to read important instructions on how to fill out the computer card
- Test #1 Practical Information:
- You MUST bring your student I.D. card to the test
- Only the McMaster standard calculator Casio fx-991 is allowed
- Your name and signature must be written in PEN on BOTH parts of the test paper and on the computer card.
- The rest of the computer card must be filled out in PENCIL
- If you cannot write the test due to medical or family reasons then fill out this form WITHIN ONE WEEK of the missed test. In this case the weight for the missed test will be added to your final exam.
- Test #1 will be based on the sections from the Suggested Problems #1 plus proper computer card filling. It will take place on July 9th during class time (from 7-8.15pm), and we will then continue with the lecture from 8.30-9.45pm in our usual room HH109. However, the test will take place in rooms BSB 105/106 in the "Burke Science Building" - make sure you find these rooms on time. I recommend beeing there early, the rooms will be open from around 6.45pm.
- If you feel you need extra help with math, there is a private tutor available: You can contact Savannah Spilotro by email (spilotsm@mcmaster.ca) and ask/negotiate about the details. She was a TA for the winter 1M03 course, that's why I decided to annouce this (non-free) option here.
- Welcome to Math 1M03! Please have a look at the Course Outline. To get started, here is a link to the Mathematics Review Manual, which is also available at the bookstore. There it has the title "Calculus... Fear No More" - it is worth checking out!
- The Math Help Centre begins operation on June 24, from 4:30-5:30, Mon-Thurs. until the end of the summer term. It is in HH Main Floor, in the Math Cafe seating area up near the main entrance, and there are tutors available to help you free of charge!!!
- You should start doing Assignment #0 (not for credit) and
Assignment #1 (see the assignments button below). They are due at 11:59pm on Friday June 26th and at 11:59pm on Monday June 29th, respectively (also see Course Calendar). Assignment #0 is really a tutorial to show you how answers are entered into the online system.
