Crack pattern in ceramics subject to thermal shock

Congratulations Dr. Shabani!

On September 5 2024, Jamal Shabani defended his Ph.D. thesis “Systematic design of compliant morphing structures with stimulus as design and state variable”.

Jamal’s doctoral work deals with topology optimisation with “responsive” materials whose elastic response can be altered by an external stimulus. It is part of a collaborative project with K. Bhattacharya at Caltech, funded by a grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation grant “Collaborative Research: Optimal Design of Responsive Materials and Structures”, DMS-2009303.

Jamal as now joined the department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison as a postdoc in Krishnan Suresh’s group.
