31 July 2018: There will be a TA review session to cover solutions to the Practice Final Exam (see below under Assessment Methods, where you will now also find the solutions to the Practice Final) on Wednesday August 1st at 12 noon in HH/305.

28 July 2018:

Solutions to the two midterm tests may now be found on Avenue to Learn . Please note that these files are for your own private study only and should not be distributed.
The lecture notes from Lectures 11 and 12 are now online, along with suggested problems in the Main Topics list.
There is now a practice final posted below under Assessment Methods. You are strongly encouraged to attempt this "under exam conditions" before looking at the solutions! (To that end, see the next point.)
We are trying to set up an extra review session on Wednesday 1st August with the TA. In order to do so, there is a poll in Avenue to Learn to find out availability (and interest). Even if you cannot make such a review session (or do not want to), then please fill out the second question of the poll, which is about the practice final solutions. Do you want these to be covered in class on Tuesday, in the extra session on Wednesday, or not at all (say because you would rather do the practice final later and don't want to see the solutions before then)? Note that the solutions will be posted online whichever way, and there will be no instructor office hours after Tuesday July 31st. Please vote!

25 July 2018: The final assignment, Assignment 5, is now posted on Avenue to Learn .

25 July 2018:

The last class on 31 July 2018 will be review material only. Please email in suggestions of what you would like to see covered by Monday 30 July 2018.
Ideally, there will be another review session in the last week of class if a time can be found that fits enough people's schedules. If not, then there will be extra office hours. More information will follow soon. Note that there will be no instructor office hours on the day of the final exam.
The Final Exam is now confirmed as being Thursday August 2nd, 7pm. Please see below under Assessment Methods for your testing room (same as for both midterms).
Course evaluations are open for this week (Monday to Friday) only: please visit the Course Evaluations page. All types of feedback (positive and negative) will really help in lots of ways, and the more responses there are, the more meaningful the results will be, so please do take some time to fill this out. 4 July 2018:

The solutions to the practice first midterm can now be found on this webpage; see Assessment Methods.
Assignment 2 is now available online (again, sorry, with a delay due to technical difficulties that it turns out were not fully resolved after last week's issues...) within Avenue to Learn ; the link to the assignment at WileyPlus is to be found in the Assignments folder/module.
Note: Although the last few problems are on material we have not yet covered in class, this assignment is being made available already as the first 5 problems on this assignment are on material related to the first midterm, so you may wish to use them as practice in preparing for the test.
Suggested problems for the topics covered in Lecture 5 are now added to the list of Topics.

29 June 2018: Details of the syllabus for the first midterm, as well as a practice midterm, can now be found on this webpage; see Assessment Methods.
Notes from Lectures 3 and 4 are also now uploaded to Lectures. Suggested problems for the corresponding topics covered may be found under Topics.

Information announced in class last night about writing the final examination at a time different from that (tentatively) scheduled may now be found below under Assessment Methods. Also, if you are a student requiring special accommodations, please also see the same place below for information about midterms and the final examination.
Suggested problems for the topics covered in Lecture 3 are now added to the list of Topics.

23 June 2018: There are now suggested problems to be found on the Topics list, for the material covered in Lectures 1 and 2 as well as some topics likely to be covered in the upcoming lecture. There are unfortunately some technical issues getting the first assignment linked from Avenue to Learn to WileyPLUS. Please check back for more information soon.

Course Content

Prerequisites: One of MATH 1AA3, 1LT3, 1NN3, 1XX3, 1ZB3, ARTSSCI 1D06 A/B, ISCI 1A24 A/B; and one of MATH 1B03, 1ZC3, 1ZZ5.
Summary of Topics: Abstract vector spaces. Linear transformations. Inner product spaces. Spectral theorems. Orthogonal Bases. Other topics.

Assessment Methods

Assignments: Five assignments, posted approximately once a week during the course on the WileyPLUS system, accessible through the course website at Avenue to Learn using an individual WileyPLUS access code for the course textbook. This code is available from the Campus Store (look for it listed on its own as an e-text, or as part of a bundle with a new hard copy of the textbook). The access code comes with an online version of the textbook and the option to purchase an e-version of the textbook for a reduced price.
In order to access WileyPLUS, log on to the course website at Avenue to Learn . There you will find a folder called "WileyPLUS" containing several links, in particular "WileyPLUS Read, Study and Practice". You will also find the assignments in the Assignments folder as they appear. The first time you try to follow a link to the WileyPLUS system, you will be asked to input your WileyPLUS access code.
All assignments are tentatively due by July 31 2018, 11:59pm. You are welcome to complete them at any time up until the deadline. There is also a model of course evaluation which does not take assessments into account; please see the Course Outline for more details.

You must bring your McMaster student ID to each test and to the final examination.
Locations of the tests and the final examination, as well as any further details (e.g. material covered, permitted aids), will be announced in lecture and posted online roughly one week in advance.
Where calculators are permitted, only the Standard McMaster calculator, Casio FX-991 (MS or MS Plus) may be used (see Exam Requirements ).

Midterms: Two written closed-book tests of 1 hour duration each.

Date of first midterm: July 5 2018, 7pm. Please arrive early and wait outside the testing room until called in.
The first midterm will take place across two classrooms, with individuals assigned to rooms according to family name:
those with family names starting A-P are in BSB/137;
those with family names starting Q-Z are in HH/305 (the usual classroom).
After the test, class will resume as usual in HH/305, after a break, at around 8:15pm.
The topics covered by the first midterm are marked on the Topics list.
Unless stated otherwise on the test, you will be allowed to use without justification any theorem statement or fact stated in class.

You are STRONGLY ADVISED to look carefully at the format of the test so that you have no surprises, and to do a trial run of the midterm by setting aside 1 hour undisturbed to do this practice test and, in so doing, following the guidelines for the actual test, which are written on the first page -- and to do so before looking at the solutions!
