STATS 3N03: Statistical Methods for Engineering

Introduction to statistical methods and applications: data analysis and statistical methods.

STATS 3J04: Probability and Statistics for Engineering

Introduction to probability, data analysis, statistical inference, regression, correlation and analysis of variance, applications to civil and environmental engineering.

Textbook

Montgomery, D.C. & Runger, G.C. (2003) Applied Statistics and Probability for Engineers, Third Edition, Wiley.

This book will be useful as a statistics and experimental design handbook in later courses and after you graduate.

These exercises are for self-directed learning. They will not be graded and you do not have to hand them in. However, you will find that writing down your interpretation of the results is an excellent way to clarify your understanding. If you complete your report and submit it to me, I will read it and return it with comments and suggestions.

I was in Washington, DC, September 9-10 serving on a Scientific Advisory Panel for the US Environmental Protection Agency, on "Fumigant Bystander Exposure Model: SOil Fumigant Exposure Assessment System (SOFEA)" and will be there again November 30 - December 3 for "Dimethoate: Issues Related to Hazard and Dose Response Assessment," "Use of Pharmacokinetic Data to Refine Carbaryl Risk Estimates from Oral and Dermal Exposure" and "The N-methyl Carbamate Cumulative Risk Assessment: Strategies and Methodologies for Exposure Assessment." These are public hearings to review the methodology the EPA proposes to use. Why is it important to have statisticians on these panels?

George Waddel Snedecor named the F-distribution in honour of Fisher.
Gosset and I both studied at New College, Oxford, but we were not there at the same time.
