Advanced Functions
& Introductory Calculus for Humanities and the Social
Sciences
Announcement:
- Welcome to the webpage of MATH1K03E. The class will
start on 6 May 2013.
- Self-diagnostic test has been posted. This test is
for revising the background knowledge. As long as you
hand in with all questions done, you will receive 2%
of the course mark.
- The first test is scheduled on 15 May during class
time. It covers Chapter 1 and Section 4.1 (only
p.286-291) of the textbook.
- The test will begin at 15 May 8:45pm in class. The
duration of the test is 90 minutes. You may use a
calculator.
- 20 May is Victoria Day, there will be no class.
See you all on 22 May.
- The second test is scheduled on 29
May during class time. It covers Section 2.1,
2.2, 2.3, 2.4, and 2.6 (up to implicit differentiation), but
exclude rectilinear motion and Motion of a projectile in
Section 2.2.
- Test 1 has been marked. You may Email me asking for the
marks. (Please note that I will be out of town from 17
(evening) to 19 May, I may not reply E-mail at that time)
- For those who attended the test and score below 8
marks can resubmit the test with
detailed solution by
27 May (Only Multiple Choice answers will not be
accepted). If you can
score 8 marks or more in the resubmission, you will
receive 8 marks for this test.
- Test 2 has been marked. It will be returned to you on
Monday. You may Email me asking for the marks.
- For those who attended test 2 and score below 12
marks (total:24) can resubmit the test with
detailed solution by
10 June (Only Multiple Choice answers will not be
accepted). If you can
score 12 marks or more in the resubmission, you will
receive 12 marks for this test.
- Test 3 is scheduled on 12
June during class time. It covers Section
2.6, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3.
- If you will attend test 3 and try your best but
score below 18 marks (total:24), you can
resubmit the test with detailed solution
by 17 June (Only Multiple Choice
answers will not be accepted). If
you can score 18 marks or more in the
resubmission, you will receive 18 marks for this test.
(This arrangement is not applicable for those who do not
attend or MSAF the test)
- The final exam will be held on 19
June. It will be a comprehensive test
covering Chapter 1 to Chapter 3. (exclude Section 2.5
and p. 243-249 which is about elasticity of demand)

Here is the calculation schemes for the overall course grades.
1. If you do not attend some tests and provided the MSAF form,
your missed test percentage (16%) will automatically be
transferred
to the final exam.
2. If you attend all tests, your marks will be calculated in two
schemes:
(i) the original scheme in the course outline
(ii) the test of lowest mark (with
resubmission mark counted) will be ignored, and that 16%
of the score will be tranferred to
the final
exam.
You final marks will be the
maximum between (i) and (ii).
